A trail in need brings friends indeed

Pertains to Calumet-Sag Trail
Plans are still on the table to discuss the Calumet Sag Trail, which will connect southwest suburban Lemont to southeast suburban Burnham with a 26-mile, shared use trail.

It will take at least five to seven years and $17 to $20 million, but once complete, more than 400,000 Southland residents will live within two miles of the 4 million square foot resource.

Most importantly, the Calumet-Sag Trail will give communities Triple Bottom Line benefits - healthier residents, stronger economies and a cleaner environment - for growth and to raise the Southland's quality of life. Calumet-Sag Trail communities struggle with traffic issues that threaten quality of life. Many of these communities are underserved by the kind of health infrastructure that trails represent, leaving little opportunity to live a more physically active lifestyle.

But, as it faces challenges like change in political leadership and tooth-and-nail fights for government grants, the trail could take 15 years - or more- to finish.

The good news is that there is already much momentum behind this resource.

The friends of the Calumet-Sag Trail is a people driven coalition of bicyclists, walkers, naturalists, developers and organizations that put their time and resources behind one goal - completing the Calumet-Sag Trail.

"We want to be that group that applies exactly what's needed when a challenge to the Trail arises." says Bob Lukens, Friends president and public relations director for the Chicago Southland Convention and Visitors Bureau. "We want to educate communities, speak up at village council meetings, and raise funds that public agencies can turn into pavement on the ground."

And they want to grow. Since their inaugural meeting in January 2007 at the Riverdale Marina, Friends has formed a board of directors and added more than 50 members and associates. But it still needs more members who can contribute time, talent and resources. Information abut the group can be found at www.calsagtrail.org or by calling (312) 427-3325, ext. 226
