| Aurora’s Illinois Avenue Bridge will be out of commission today. The one-day closure is in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for work related to the bridge’s ongoing reconstruction. Motorists are encouraged to use Broadway, Lake Street and Indian Trail Road instead. Workers today will build concrete piers that are needed to widen the bridge. The estimated $6.5 million project includes replacing the bridge deck and existing sidewalks, and adding ornamental railings and streetlights, the city’s Chris Lirot said. Once work is complete, the four-lane bridge will feature a 10-foot multi-use bike path and a 5-foot sidewalk. “You’ll have a bike path on both sides of the Fox River,” he said. The project began in April and is scheduled to be done by June, he said. The state is funding most of the project. Lirot said the bridge will be closed at least once more before work is complete. Closings have caused minor traffic backups, he said. For more information, call the mayor’s office at (630) 844-3612. |
