Commission approves master plan

Batavia is pedaling ahead with a formal bicycle plan designed to guide the community in expanding and improving bikeways.

The Batavia Plan Commission this week gave unanimous approval to the document, which includes a series of recommendations ranging from improving visibility by cutting back brush at specific intersections to building new bike trails and bridges.

“We have a lot of bicycling going on in Batavia,” city community development director Jerry Swanson said Thursday. “We need to know how to expand that network.”

With a formal bike plan in place, the city and park district will be in a strong position to receive state grants for certain types of projects, Swanson said, such as those that would provide safer routes to schools.

Ed Barsotti of the nonprofit League of Illinois Bicyclists worked as a consultant with the city to develop the bike plan, and led brainstorming sessions with residents to come up with ideas.

They identified potential designated bike routes on city streets and made suggestions for linking the existing trail system that runs through Batavia.

New bike routes and connections in the plan include:

ӢMcKee Street from Lincoln Street to Wenmoth Road.

ӢWestern Avenue from the Geneva border to Batavia High School, and Millview Drive from the high school to Route 31, with the two routes linked by a path through the high school property.

ӢPrairie Street from the Highlands south to Pine Street, and Hart Road south to Wind Energy Pass.

ӢA bicycle bridge over Randall Road at the north edge of Braeburn Marsh.

ӢLinking Lathem Street with Raddant Road and with the Fox River Trail East.

ӢA path along Fabyan Parkway from Kirk Road east toward West Chicago and the DuPage Technology Park.

The plan also identifies more than a dozen locations to install bike parking racks, including park district facilities, Randall Road and downtown shopping areas and the new Wilson Street bridge.

A major component of the plan is creating “safe routes to school,” with recommendations for installation of crosswalks and sidewalks and bicycle parking areas.

Moreover, the plan includes spot improvements all over the city, including the installation of motion detectors at signalized intersections to serve both bicycles and motorcycles.
