| Cyclists in Batavia may soon have an easier and safer way to get around. Batavia has contracted Ed Barsotti, executive director of the League of Illinois Bicyclists, to prepare the city's first-ever bicycle plan. His job will be to work with an advisory committee to plan out a bike route and recommend treatments for roadways along that route, including striped bike lanes and new road signs. Batavia's plan will resemble, and possibly link up with, the extensive bike routes planned for Geneva and North Aurora, which should be no surprise. Barsotti helped design plans for both cities, with input from cycling enthusiasts like himself in both municipalities. But as a former longtime Batavia resident, Barsotti said he is looking forward to designing Batavia's plan most of all. Barsotti moved to Aurora a few years ago, after living most of his life in Batavia. "This is a dream consulting gig," he said. "I'm excited about being able to help my hometown improve its bicycling conditions." Barsotti's first step is to hold a brainstorming session with Batavia cyclists, to determine the best routes for the proposed path. He said he plans to include the Batavia and Geneva park districts in that session and will base the final plan on both the trail system and the city's roadways... |
