Pertains to EJ&E, DuPage River Trail, Plainfield | |
PLAINFIELD PARK DISTRICT February 19, 2008 By JANET LUNDQUIST Staff Writer PLAINFIELD -- It may be snowy outside, but park district staff members are thinking about bike trails. Specifically, they're thinking about a trail they want to extend on the northwest side of the district. The Normantown bike path runs from 135th Street to 127th. The district would like to extend it north from 127th Street to the Equestrian Center on Normantown Road, and are hoping a grant will help cover the cost. The district plans to apply for a grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Bike Path Program that would cover half the cost of the project, estimated between $80,000 to $100,000. The grant would be matched with developer cash donations to the park district, said Cameron Bettin, superintendent of planning for the park district. Grant recipients are not announced until about six months after the March 1 application deadline, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Work to extend the Normantown Bike Path would likely be done in the spring of 2009. Eventually the Normantown path would connect to one planned on Normantown Road by the Will County Forest Preserve, Bettin said. Last year the district finished almost five miles of trails, said Greg Bott, park district executive director. The district's focus, when it comes to bike paths, is the DuPage River Trail. Planned since 2002, the trail will eventually stretch from 135th Street to Theodore Street. "Our primary interest is to get the DuPage River Trail completed," Bott said. This year park staff is hopeful work can begin on the DuPage River Trail from Illinois 59 to the Eaton Preserve, located on 135th Street. But that project may not begin until the spring of 2009. "We've been very fortunate in that we've had quite a bit of success with the OSLAD program," Bott said.
