Those shared bicycle lanes the board received a standing ovation for approving? They might not happen next year after all. Focusing on Oak Park's capital fund, which carries a $650,000 operating deficit for 2009, Trustee Ray Johnson proposed cutting the bike plan's $105,000. But he supports spending for planting perennials, something he said is "what makes Oak Park special, and it's an investment we maybe need to be hard-nosed about and maybe we need to be spending more on things like that." Marsey didn't mention flowers, but expressed support for postponing the bicycle plan. "Much like the brick streets, which I also like, in tight (economic times) it feels like a luxury," he said. Village President David Pope said he preferred to keep the bicycle plan in the 2009 budget. The board favored cutting $50,000 for traffic calming measures and trimming $400,000 from the proposed $1 million for alley paving. If approved, that would close the capital fund deficit to $200,000. A suggestion to nix next year's contribution to the bicycle plan was delayed until staff can determine how much can be trimmed from an equipment replacement line item. "I think everyone around the table really wants to support (the bicycle plan)," said Trustee Jan Pate. The plan would create shared bicycle lanes next year on Lake Street, North and South boulevards and East, and a dedicated bike lane on Division. The 10-year plan carries a $3.3 million price tag. |
