| Pertains to Blackberry Creek, Yorkville, Oswego | |
| It's no secret that the leaders of neighboring Oswego and Yorkville enjoy a little competition once in a while. In February, the village and city boards faced-off in a bowling match. Future proposed competitions include a canoe race and a quest to grow the largest pumpkin. But the towns' most recent accomplishment was all about bringing the two communities together. On Aug. 24, leaders in both communities will celebrate the completion of around 2,000 feet of bike trail in Yorkville, which connects to a trail in Oswego. This new section of the paved path stretches from Yorkville's Grande Reserve subdivision, located off Route 34, to an existing trail in unincorporated Oswego, according to Oswego Village President Brian LeClercq. "This is just the start of more trails to come," LeClercq said. "I hope to have connectivity on both sides of the (Fox) river. I hope to see (trails) for miles and miles." Yorkville Mayor Valerie Burd said she and LeClercq began discussing connecting their trails shortly after they both took office in April 2007. It's part of their goals to create a stronger relationship between the neighboring towns because, Burd said, "working together we can achieve so much more." Burd ticked off water conservation and transportation as examples of issues that need regional, not individual, solutions. Dave Mogle, Yorkville's director of parks and recreation, said the new trail will enable residents to pedal their bikes for several miles -- from Orchard Road to Kennedy Road -- through the Grande Reserve subdivision, without going on major streets. "This is a big deal," Burd said. "I really believe that we have to look beyond our own little communities and reach out to our neighbors so we can accomplish the goals we set." This trail, she said, is just the beginning. |
