Bike trail would link city with Lake County

Pertains to Skokie Valley Trail, Glenview, Northfield, Northbrook, Wilmette
Bicyclists will one day pedal from Chicago to Lake County if several North Shore communities realize a dream of converting former railroad property into a paved trail linking cycling routes in the city and suburbs.

This 7-mile Skokie Valley Trail would begin at Glenview Road in Glenview and weave through parts of Wilmette, Northfield and Northbrook, said Brigitte Mayerhofer, Wilmette's director of engineering.

The four north suburban communities are expected to each pay $6,000 for a feasibility study, headed by the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, to determine whether the path is possible.

Trails already exist in parts of north suburban Cook County, and the new path would link with established routes that continue toward Lake County.

There also have been discussions about building a bike trail to begin at Chicago's Bryn Mawr Avenue and Pulaski Road and extend into Lincolnwood and possibly Skokie, said Nick Jackson, the federation's deputy director.

"If the trails were built, you could have a continuous trail all the way up to Lake Bluff.," he said.

Until the study is completed in fall, officials aren't sure how much the Skokie Valley Trail would cost.

"The hope is that the project would be grant eligible," said Tom Poupard, Northbrook's director of community planning.

Wilmette approached Glenview, Northfield and Northbrook about the trail after the Union Pacific Railroad announced in 2005 that it would no longer run trains along a stretch of tracks that cuts through several north suburbs.

A public meeting about the trail is scheduled for 6 p.m. April 19 at Northbrook Village Hall, 1225 Cedar Lane.
