Pertains to Old Plank Road Trail, Joliet
The Forest Preserve received an Illinois Bikeway Grant for $200,000 to help complete the final phase of the Old Plank Road Trail (OPRT). The Trail is at present 19.5 miles from Park Road, in Joliet Township, eastward to Western Avenue in Cook County. The project will extend it as far west as possible along an abandoned rail line and uses as few street routes as possible to connect to the Forest Preserve’s Wauponsee Glacial Trail.

The grant, administered through IDNR, will be used to convert one mile of the abandoned Oswego & Indiana Plank Road Company rail line to a 10-foot wide, multi-use asphalt trail. The trail will exit the rail line and go south on a small parcel of land owned by the City of Joliet and leased by the District. On this parcel, a small trailhead will be constructed, with vehicle and bicycle parking, water fountain, landscaping, and signage.
