The development of two additional sections of the DuPage River Trail was set in motion when the Board of Commissioners approved a construction contract and an engineering contract at its January meeting.

The DuPage River Trail involves a multijurisdictional partnership that is constructing a 10-foot-wide, asphalt trail along the DuPage River. Thirteen different agencies entered into an agreement to add sections of the trail in their jurisdictions when land and funding become available.

"This partnership with many different groups will eventually produce a 29-mile trail from Naperville to Channahon," said Forest Preserve Board President Cory Singer. "This is a good example of how working together produces results."

So far, the Forest Preserve has constructed portions of the trail in Hammel Woods (1.7 miles), in Shorewood, and Whalon Lake (2.35 miles) and Riverview Farmstead (1 mile), both located in Naperville.

The construction project approved by the Board of Commissioners will extend the DuPage River Trail an additional 1.5 miles from Hammel Woods, at Black Road, on Newberry Lane in Plainfield.

The trail extension is part of a larger construction project at Hammel Woods, which includes improvements to the trailhead and pathways around the Hammel Woods Dog Park to make them compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

The project will temporarily close a portion of Hammel Woods and the Hammel Woods Dog Park. The Dog Park is expected to be closed to the public for up to two weeks (including one weekend) for this work to be done. At times, it may be necessary to close the entire DuPage River Access as part of this construction. Exact dates for the closures will be posted once available on the Forest Preserve's Web site, ReconnectWithNature.org, and on the Forest Preserve's social networks (Facebook Page, Facebook Dog Park Group, Facebook Places, Twitter and Foursquare).

This construction contract also includes alternatives for crossing Black Road at grade as well as under Black Road on the west side of the DuPage River Bridge.

The engineering contract approved by the Board of Commissioners is to provide the first phase of engineering for the DuPage River Trail between Knock Knolls Park, owned by the Naperville Park District, and 95th Street, in Napervile.

In October 2011, the Forest Preserve District was awarded a grant from the federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program (CMAQ) in the amount of $1,372,000 for this trail connection. This grant provides 80 percent of engineering and construction costs for this extension of the trail.

The Forest Preserve District has been working with the City of Naperville and the Naperville Park District for many years on the development of the DuPage River Trail to link several forest preserves, local parks, residential areas and commercial districts. Separately, the Will County Department of Highways is preparing construction plans for the extension of 95th Street across the DuPage River west of Knoch Knolls Park and is including a bicycle underpass for the DuPage River Trail.

Partnering with the Forest Preserve District of Will County in the construction of the DuPage River Trail are the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, the City of Naperville, the Naperville Park District, the Village of Bolingbrook, the Village of Plainfield, the Plainfield Park District, the City of Joliet, the Village of Shorewood, the Village of Channahon, the Channahon Park District, and Openlands.
