Board tables bike route plans

Pertains to Lisle
Plans for a bike route that goes through downtown Lisle are getting closer, but any final decisions will have to wait a few more weeks to be ironed out, the Lisle Village Board decided Dec. 15.

The board voted unanimously to table the item until an unknown later date.

The hold up? Lisle Main Street. The proposed bike route would shoot down the side of the street, between the parking and the traffic lanes. While this could potentially bring bikers to the revitalized downtown, some board members questioned the safety of that route.

Not only do bikers have to stay alert on the busy road, but "we still have to train people how to use Main Street," Lisle Mayor Joe Broda said, pointing to the people who do U-turns in their cars or whip down the street.

"I'm concerned about encouraging the use of Main Street," Lisle board member Ken Modaff said.

To Modaff, anything that would contribute to traffic on the main downtown drag should be avoided.

Broda encouraged re-looking at the plans and diverting the route to Center or Spencer streets instead of Main Street.

Plans for a Lisle bike path started more than a year ago, when the bicycle and pedestrian task force was formed and the group began looking to connect different parts of Lisle through bike paths. Some of the goals are to create a more direct bike route from downtown to the Morton Arboretum and make connections to Woodridge, Naperville and Danada Forest Preserve.
