Pertains to Hickory Creek Greenway, Joliet
A boy drowned in a Joliet creek Friday evening after he ventured into a deep portion of the waterway and couldn't return to the bank, authorities said Saturday.

Calvin R. Williams Jr., 7 of the 400 block of Joliet Street in Joliet, was playing with two 9-year-old boys about 6 p.m. Friday in Hickory Creek, about 200 feet east of Washington Street and Henderson Avenue, Police Lt. Stephen Breen said.

"The victim, along with two little boys, were playing in the water at that location, not knowing the depth of the water or the strength of the current, and Williams was not able to get back to land," Breen said.

The creek is 8 to 10 feet deep where Calvin went down, officials said.

"The two other boys left to get help once they saw him go down," Breen said.

They came back with an adult who was able to pull Calvin from the water, but "by the time they got back, it looks like it was too late."
