| State transportation money will be set aside in 2007 to rebuild the Dundee Road bridge over Northwest Highway in Palatine, one of several road projects in the Northwest suburbs that officially got state funding Friday. Among them were two projects in Palatine - the $13.4 million bridge replacement and interchange reconstruction on Dundee Road over Northwest Highway and the Union Pacific Northwest Line; and a $3.4 million reconstruction of Plum Grove Road from Kirchoff to Aldridge roads. "These were in the plans for many years," Palatine Assistant Village Manager Sam Trakas said. We saw it in the five-year plan two years ago." Clarita Lao, program development engineer for the Illinois Department of Transportation, said the new Dundee Road bridge will be wider and have an extra turning lane. The bridge replacement has been in IDOT's multi-year program for five years; the Plum Grove Road reconstruction has for six. Also approved for funding was a $2.3 million intersection improvement at Arthur Avenue and Northwest Highway in Arlington Heights. Arthur Avenue will be widened over the Union Pacific tracks to allow easier turning for vehicles, especially trucks. Lao said local projects like these are often referred to IDOT by regional council of mayors, in this case the Northwest Municipal Conference. In most cases, 80 percent of the funding for these projects comes from the federal government with the remaining 20 percent split between the state and local authority, Lao said. Even though funding was announced for these 2007 projects on Friday, many variables still exist to be worked out, Trakas said. Among these are the starting dates for the projects, their expected lengths of time and the exact way motorists will be affected during construction.
