LEMONT — The Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program secured $3.6 million in federal funding to finance projects along the Calumet-Sag Trail — which will allow for the 33-mile trail from Lemont to Alsip to possibly open in November.

State Sen. Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) said the funding will provide $1.78 million for construction between 104th Avenue and Route 83 in her district. With the revenue from the ITEP program, the Alsip to Lemont section of the trail is now fully funded.

"This is great news for the Calumet-Sag Trail," Radogno said in a press release. "When completed the trail will enrich the lives of hundreds of thousands of residents who live nearby and many others who will travel to enjoy it."

The ITEP is a federally-funded, competitive program that encourages transportation-related enhancement projects, according to a press release from Radogno.

The Calumet-Sag Trail will be 32 miles long and will connect five regional multi-use trails, creating a trail system that spans more than 150 miles.

When construction and maintenance efforts begin on bike trails, walking paths, historic preservation efforts and streetscape beautification projects, it is estimated more than 400 jobs will be created.
