Cary Park District is working to link existing multi-use trails to new ones.

Park District Director of Planning and Development David Raica discussed a trail-alignment plan which was approved by park district commissioners at a recent Board of Commissioners meeting.

"It's going to help complete a large portion of the trail system in the northern quadrant of the park district," Raica said. "It's really going to tie things together."

As an example, Raica said if the Illinois Department of Transportation approves the plans, people will be able to travel from the Three Oaks School area to Lions Park by the trail.

"They'll be able to go on existing trails, then go on the newer trail that's built, all the way over to District 26 and then all the way over to Lions Park. There will actually be almost six miles of trails in the northern portion of town that will be linked together once this is completed."

Park District Executive Director Steve Cherveny said the approval was for part one of their physical engineering plans concerning their Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program grant, which the park district received in 2006.

The first portion of the trail runs west from South Rawson Bridge Road, through Decker Park, then parallel to Mink Trail to Cary-Grove Park.

"Then in Cary-Grove Park it will go from roughly the School District 26 property, to the northern part of our property and down the exterior side on the east," to the existing trail, Cherveny said.

With an approximate cost of about $700,000, the State of Illinois is providing $408,800 for the project, Raica said. The remainder would be paid through the park district.

There are currently over 13 miles of trail within the Cary Park District boundaries, Raica said. This includes the Cary, Trout Valley and a portion of Oakwood Hills. The latest project would add about 1.8 miles of trail, he added.

Cherveny said plans are scheduled to be brought to IDOT review this month. Subject to Illinois Department of Transportation's approval, Raica is hopeful for construction to begin in summer 2009.
