| WHEATON - Plans for completing the Centennial Trail Section for DuPage County likely took their final political step at the Forest Preserve District meeting Tuesday. Forest district commissioners voted to complete engineering services and construction on the 2.8-mile section that runs through DuPage. "This should be the final resolution," said Mary Ellen Weller, manager of landscape architecture for the forest district. The recreational trail, which will run about 16 miles total through Cook, DuPage and Will counties, was agreed upon in 1998 and will provide a major link along the Des Plaines River. Will County decided over the years to pursue construction on its own, Weller said. The DuPage and Cook County portions, which comprise about 13 of the 16 miles, obtained an Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program grant, which will cover 80 percent of the total construction cost. As a result, DuPage has to come up with only $130,000 of the $600,000 cost for its section of the trail. The DuPage section will connect on both ends to Cook County and will rest on land leased from the Metropolitan Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. Adnon Nammari, and engineer for the Cook County Forest Preserve District - the lead agency for the trail project - said the path should be completed by the end of the year. "I think it's providing links and opportunities for people to get out there, bicycle, enjoy and get some exercise," Weller said. "It gives people another option to getting in their car." |
