The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, ending its yearlong centennial celebration with a bang, has opened the first sections of a 26-mile trail from Chicago to Lockport. Six miles of the trail were dedicated at ceremonies last week. Another five miles are scheduled to open by the end of the year. The trail, which runs along the Des Plaines River, the Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Illinois and Michigan Canal, is open for hiking, cross-country skiing and, although it is not paved, bicycling.
