| Pertains to Des Plaines | |
| Biking around Des Plaines might be an easier trek under a plan to draw a citywide map of designated bicycle routes. Plans could lead to establishing bikeways throughout the city, but for now the park district is taking the first step of holding a meeting April 10 to field feedback. With the results, the park district hopes draft a map to denote those safest routes for bicyclists, and designate routes on roads or off roads. Residents who walk, run, inline skate or bicycle are encouraged to attend the meeting to tell the Des Plaines Park District about their habits. Residents also will be asked about what would encourage them to ditch their cars more, parks Executive Director John Hecker said. Members of the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation who live in Des Plaines are expected to be especially helpful. “Because those folks are armed with firsthand knowledge,” Hecker said. The information gathered also will help the city if officials decided to implement a bikeway plan, which would mark roads with a narrow lane for bicycles, he added. Hecker believes encouraging more alternatives to driving will break up the congestion around the city. Congestion is an issue especially around schools where most parents drop off their children. Instead, Hecker suggest the city look at encouraging what is called a “human bus.” In a human bus, a parent or guardian escorts a group of children to the school. Des Plaines officials are enthusiastic about the project. “We are pleased to be partnering with the Des Plaines Park District on this project. Des Plaines is fortunate to have some great bike trails in and around our city and these maps will help bicyclists use the safest and most efficient routes,” said City Manager David Niemeyer, an avid bicyclist. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 10. Those who cannot attend can call Hecker with their comments at (847) 391-5700 or e-mail him at jh@desplainesparks.org Link to story |
