RICHMOND - The McHenry County Conservation District approved a $655,000 bid Thursday to pave a bike trail that connects the Hebron Trail with the Prairie Trail.

The trail and parking lot are scheduled to be completed by this fall, said district spokeswoman Wendy Kummerer and will allow for hiking, biking, horseback riding, cross country skiing and snowmobiling.

An Illinois Department of Natural Resources Recreational Trails Program Grant for $304,000 helped to pay for the paving project, Kummerer said.

The 1.75-mile trail, part of the 415-acre Nippersink North conservation site in Richmond, will connect the 29-mile Prairie Trail to the 2-mile Hebron Trail and add another link in the Grand Illinois Trail System.

The district bought the Nippersink North properties in 2001 and 2002 and approved the master plan for the area, including the bike trail, in October.
