| The McHenry County Conservation District will pay $564, 000 for 45 acres of backwater marsh and oak savanna that is a haven for a state-threatened bird, officials said Friday. The district board voted Thursday to buy the property at Broadway Street and Beach Drive in McHenry near Moraine Hills State Park. The purchase was a high priority because of its untouched wetlands and its status as a refugee for wetland birds, including the state threatened sandhill crane, officials said. "It's never been farmed or developed," said Wendy Kummerer, a district spokeswoman. Also Thursday, Bonnie Leahy of Marengo was selected as president of the district's board. |
