Council OKs funds to design lake paths

Alderman gave the green light Monday night for engineering services to design separate pedestrian and bicycle paths for the city's lakefront, despite lingering concerns that approval would commit them to the lakefront plan's other expensive components.

Under the proposal, Chicago-based EDAW Inc. will perform the design services. Council members would still have to sign off on construction of the new bike and pathways, a project estimated at $4.7 million. The work is to include design and construction of more than two miles of pathways "capable of supporting vehicular traffic,";
