Pertains to Centennial Trail, Lyons, McCook, Hodgkins, Willow Springs, Burr Ridge, Lemont, Lockport | |
You someday may be able to walk or bike from Lyons to Lockport via DuPage County. DuPage County Forest Preserve District commissioners Tuesday agreed to contribute to a 13-mile, multiregional trail along portions of the Des Plaines River. The local segment is a 2.8 mile stretch is southwest DuPage, just south of Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve near Darien. The entire cost of the project, dubbed the Centennial Trail, is $3 million, but a state grant will offset much of the expense. The district also is sharing costs with the Cook County Forest Preserve. Overall, DuPage will pay about $130,800 for engineering fees and construction of the path. The route begins in Lyons and ends in Lockport, connecting with the Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail. The DuPage district also is cooperating with the Illinois State Toll Highway and Will County to develop a pathway along the North-South Tollway extension. This route would offer links to the Centennial Trail. Another initiative involves the Route 66 bike trail. This trail would loosely follow the old Route 66 and involve a bike path already in existence at Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve. |
