Two major donations helped complete a community trail project connecting Cuba Marsh Forest Preserve to the Barrington Park District's Citizens Park. An anonymous donor generously contributed $100,000 toward the cost of a trail bridge and the Barrington Park District pledged additional $100,000 to help underwrite the cost of the trail connection. The new 0.75-mile gravel trail connects existing trails at Cuba Marsh to Citizens Park through the southwest corner of the Preserve. A 50-foot timber bridge and an 850-foot boardwalk, the longest ever built by the Lake County Forest Preserves, span wetlands and a stream along the trail's route. The bridge is designated the "Keith Pederson Bridge" in recognition of the memorial gift made to honor the former Forest Preserve Board member (District 5;1972-76), a devoted naturalist and outdoorsman. The trail connection opened for access this fall, a public celebration of this improvement is planned for spring 2008. |
