Pertains to Norton Creek, Wayne
After many months of work, the DuPage County Forest Preserve District has approved the master plan for the new Dunham Forest Preserve.

The 378-acre parcel is located in unincorporated DuPage County, near the village of Wayne. It is bordered by Army Trail Road to the north, Union Pacific railroad tracks to the east, and Cornerstone Lakes and Honey Hill subdivisions to the south and west. The district purchased the Dunham preserve in January 2006 for $25 million. The land was paid for with funds gained through the 2005 refinancing of existing bonds.

Restoration plans for the preserve include 100 acres of prairie, 190 acres of wetlands and 40 acres of savanna. In addition, the meander of Norton Creek will be restored. Other features of the plan include a 4-acre picnic area, 2.25 miles of equestrian turf trails and 2 miles of limestone trails. Also slated are two scenic overlooks, a wayside stop and interpretive signage for natural and historical features.

The cost to implement the entire plan is $13.73 million, said Jessica Ortega, landscape architect supervisor. Implementation is divided into four phases of short-, medium- and long-term projects, she said. Short-term projects, given a time frame of zero to five years to implement, include parking lot, picnic area and interpretive overlook construction. Funding required for these three projects is $500,000, of which $300,000 already is approved, Ortega said. Work can begin on the parking lot once the necessary permits are secured, she said.

Medium-term projects, expected to take between six and 10 years, include the turf and limestone trails, prairie/savanna restoration and construction of a bridge, boardwalk, scenic and interpretive overlooks and wayside stop. Projects deemed long-term, with a time frame of 10 or more years, include the stream meandering, north portion of the turf trail and wetland/prairie restoration.
