The DuPage County Forest Preserve District is searching for history buffs or people interested in mapping the future of the Greene Farm in Naperville.

The historic farmhouse and barn, on Greene and Hobson roads, has been owned by the district for more than 35 years.

But so far, it’s only been an aesthetic feature for people using the bike trail around the Greene Valley Forest Preserve.

When the forest preserve first acquired the property, it was understood that the farm would eventually be used for cultural, educational, historical and recreation purposes.

Now the district is ready to make it happen. This week it announced it’s forming a citizens committee to tackle the idea.

“I think the time has come to search for organizations or groups that can utilize these buildings for recreational or educational uses,” Naperville resident Herb Nadelhoffer told district officials this week. He plans to join the committee.

Commissioner Carl Schultz of Aurora, who will head the committee, said all ideas are welcome — as long as they fit the district’s mission for education, recreation or preservation.

“There’s lots of possibilities of what we can accomplish,” he said. “It’s just a matter of a lot of minds to get together and come up with some ideas.”

But there’s financial restrictions to consider. The farmhouse and barn, built by William Greene in 1841, is in need of some repairs. No matter how it is used, it will need to be financed.

“Our big task is how are we going to program that space and then how are we going to fund it,” Schultz said.

That could include forming a nonprofit group or a larger foundation to support the barn. The committee also may try to figure out how to solicit donations and sponsors and if it should form agreements with other taxing bodies to minimize how much tax dollars are spent. Those interested in becoming a part of the committee may contact Schultz at (630) 236-6818 or cschultz@dupageforest.com.
