EPA chief backs plans for urban greenways

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency chief William Reilly on Thursday enthusiastically backed a proposed 1,000-mile greenway network here, saying the project would complete early visionary plans for Chicago parks.

He called it the most ambitious plan of its kind in the country and said it would move the Chicago area "to the head of the greenways parade" as part of a national trend toward development of such linear urban parks and trails.
