The City Council has selected an engineering firm to prepare plans to upgrade a section of the Des Plaines River Trail in Cook County. The 3-mile diret trail runs mostly through Cook County Forest Preserve District property within Des Plaines, between Touhy Avenue and Golf Road. Plans call for construction of a 12-foot-wide crushed limestone trail for cyclists and pedestrians, with dirt shoulders for horseback riders. The project also will add benches, point-of-interest placards and other signs, and lighting at intersections, City Engineer Tim Oakley said. At a meeting Monday, alderman approved a contract with Itasca-based Civiltech Engineering Inc. for design work at a cost of nearly $292,000. The city's share is about $58,000, with a federal grant covering the rest. City officials hope construction of the trail will be completed by late 2009. |
