Des Plaines Mayor Tony Arredia has gotten a boost for his river walk plan. Arredia said he got a "verbal" handshake Thursday from Cook County Forest Preserve officials, who agreed to support the city's pursuit of grant money for the project's first phase. In the first phase, a trail for bicycles and horses would be added along the river between Golf and Ballard roads. The grant agreement still needs the county board’s OK, which Arredia expects. "So, we're off and running with this thing," Arredia said. In November, the mayor formed a task force to pursue a river walk. Ideally, he wants the project completed by the time he leaves office in two years. One recreational trail grant doled out by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources provides money for horse, biking, cross country skiing, mountain biking and water trail projects. The second phase of the Des Plaines river walk would create a trail on forest preserve property from Dempster Street to Touhy Avenue. These projects are expected to encourage development along the industrial Busse Highway corridor. Its scenic location near the river could lure riverside restaurants. |
