Pertains to Millennium Trail, Squaw Creek, Wauconda
A planned 1.9-mile hiking and biking trail in the Wauconda area will connect several Lake County Forest Preserve District attractions.

The path will branch off from the Millennium Trail, which runs through central and western parts of the county and link the Lakewood and Ray Lake forest preserves.

It's a precursor to a planned trail through the 403-acre Ray Lake preserve, which has limited public access now.

The forest preserve board agreed Tuesday to hire Civiltech Engineering of Itasca to engineer the proposed connection. The firm will be paid nearly $129,000 for the job.

The path will connect to the Millennium Trail at Route 176 and Fairfield Road. It will run northeast through the former Four Winds Golf Club, which is now part of the Lakewood Forest Preserve and then end at the Ray Lake preserve, which is on Gilmer Road east of Fairfield Road, officials said.

The path primarily will consist of a crushed stone trail, according to district documents. A 110-foot-long bridge also is planned, as is a parking lot at Ray Lake that could accommodate 25 cars.

The engineering should be completed early next year. Construction could start in spring 2008 and finish in the fall, officials said.

The entire project could cost $950,000, said Randy Seebach, the district’s land development manager. A $200,000 state grant will offset some of the cost.

The effort will be the latest development for the Millennium Trail, a long-planned 35-mile loop though central, western and northern Lake County. Eleven miles of the trail have been completed.

The Millennium Trail eventually will link more preserves and other trails throughout the area.

"I think we’ve made great progress with it," said forest district Commissioner Diana O'Kelly, a Mundelein-area Republican whose district includes the site of the proposed Ray Lake connection.

"The Millennium Trail has connected neighborhoods and connected the communities to the forest preserve district."
