KANE COUNTY - The Kane County Forest Preserve District spent more than $11.3 million to buy about 266 acres of open space in Dundee, Geneva and St. Charles Townships, including a former YWCA kids camp near South Elgin, district officials announced Friday.

The land purchases, made with proceeds from the $85 million bond sale that Kane voters approved in April, include the 77-year-old Camp Tu-Endie-Wei.

The wooded, 26-acre site on Illinois Highway 25 near Stearns Road, which was owned by the Elgin YWCA, was purchased for slightly more than $2 million. The site is expected to continue to be used for youth programs or a youth camp of some type in partnership with the St. Charles Park District, according to John Hoscheit, president of the Kane Forest Preserve Commission.

The district also closed recently on the purchase of 37 acres at Illinois Highway 72 and Sleepy Hollow Road, near West Dundee, for $1 million and on more than 200 acres north of the Dick Young Forest Preserve, at Wenmoth Road and Main Street, near Batavia for $8.3 million.

Not including the $17.2 million set aside for development, $52.5 million in land acquisition bond proceeds remained available, according to district records.
