| Will County Forest Preserve District commissioners Thursday agreed to pay $1.1 million for approximately 50 acres. Of that amount, $558,000 is for acquiring approximately 28 acres next to Woodlawn Cemetery at Joliet's west end; the rest is to pay for an inactive 22-acre horse farm west of Peotone. The district intends to add the 28 acres owned by Iva Lou, Theo and Catherine Polley to the Rock Run Greenway. Earlier erroneous reports indicated the district would pay as much as $5.5 million for the property, officials said. The former Ace-N-Pace farm property, owned by Michigan resident Robert Barnes, will be added to the Huyck's Grove Preserve. Also Thursday, district commissioners authorized attorney Richard Kavanaugh to file a formal complaint of trespass and damage against InSite Real Estate "for contamination and ecological damage" to part of the Hickory Barrens Preserve near New Lenox. InSite, which owns property adjacent to the preserve, is also being sued by the Illinois attorney general's office, said Forest Preserve District Executive Director Michael Pasteris. Pasteris said he is hoping the complaint by the attorney general's office would "fire this person to more expeditiously negotiate with us." The district will file the complaint only if talks with InSite deteriorate, he said. Commissioners also added 104 acres in Frankfort Township and 59 acres in Homer Township to the district's list of potential acquisitions. |
