South suburban leaders will break ground on a 26-mile trail at various locations throughout the southland Saturday, which is National Trails Day.

A series of trail dedication ceremonies begins at 1:30 p.m. in Burnham and 2 p.m. in Lemont, at opposite ends of the trail, according to the Chicago Southland Convention and Visitors Bureau. The event will culminate at 4 p.m. in Alsip in the middle of the trail with state and local dignitaries at Freedom Park, at 131st Street and Cicero Avenue, for a celebration.

In 2005, the Calumet-Sag Trail Committee had a vision to build a multiuse trail from Lemont to Burnham. Four years later, the coalition has received engineering funds for development of the trail, which has spurred the formation of a support group, The Friends of the Calumet-Sag Trail.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., secured $268,000 in federal matching funds for a master corridor development plan, said Bob Lukens, president of the Friends of the Calumet-Sag Trail. The local match is 20 percent, and, at the Alsip celebration, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy will present the Friends of the Calumet-Sag Trail with a metropolitan community support grant funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation totaling a projected $35,000 over two years. The $35,000 will go toward the local match requirement of about $54,000.

Rails-to-Trails and Coca-Cola's Metropolitan Grants Program are designed to support and facilitate growth of trail-building communities.

"It's going to connect 14 communities along the Calumet River and Cal-Sag Channel. Along the route will be four Metra stations to take (riders) to Chicago. It will connect these communities and provide another transportation option," said Lukens, who is the public relations manager for the Chicago Southland Convention
