Hoping to promote fitness and help fund the completion of its fitness trail, the College of Lake County invites students, staff and the community to come run or walk Saturday on the Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St. The College of Lake County Foundation, the Student Government Association and athletic department are sponsoring the event, which will begin at 10 a.m. at the service drive on the west side of Parking Lot 7A at Brae Loch Road. Individuals can register Saturday by arriving at 9:30 a.m. Runners will leave first and walkers will follow. This is a noncompetitive event on a 2-mile course. The event is designed to raise funds to complete construction of the college’s fitness trail, said Bill Devore, executive director of the foundation. About two-thirds of the fitness trail is finished, with about 5,000 linear feet in need of completion to close the loop. Devore said it will cost $75,000 to complete the last third of the 2.62-mile trail. The trail will be 8 feet wide, 6 inches deep and made of crushed gravel so it can be used for running, walking or biking, he said. The CLC Foundation has committed $25,000 toward this project. Devore said several area businesses and corporations are sought for financial support. The SGA is working with many of the college’s student organizations to encourage their participation in this event. Members of the college’s cross-country team and environmental group are among those coming, Devore said. "If we get a lot of student involvement, it will grab attention to this project," he added. The fitness trail serves CLC students and staff and also connects with both the village of Grayslake's bike trails and the Lake County Forest Preserve’s Rollins Savanna on West Washington Street. "Students can ride their bikes to campus if they want to and teachers can get out during their lunch hour to walk or work out," Devore said. The CLC Foundation is a volunteer-based group that provides financial support for scholarships and a variety of projects and programs in support of the College of Lake County. Individuals who join the race are asked to pay a participation fee. Devore said one person may give $5 or people may have sponsors and donate a larger amount. Devore added the event also will include a 50/50 raffle where half the money will go to the winner and the other half toward building the fitness trail.
