Pertains to Homewood
After attending a conference on automobile safety, Deputy Police Chief Jim Gannon plans to apply some of what he learned to help curb traffic accidents in Homewood.

"The conference was only three hours (long), but it was one of the best that I've been to," he said.

The Healthy Streets conference was the launch of a program to reduce automobile crashes by 50 percent in a 10-square-mile section of Chicago's Northwest Side.

Chicago Aldermen Ariel Reboyras (30th), Thomas Allen (38th) and Margaret Laurino (39th) attended the event.

Steve Buchtel, Southland Coordinator of the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, said towns such as Homewood could benefit from some of the solutions discussed at the conference.

"Homewood has had a bad run lately of awful traffic crashes," said Buchtel, who was involved with organizing the conference.

"Officer Gannon traveled to our conference to view the solutions that we are implementing on Chicago's Northwest Side that aim to cut all traffic crashes by half in two years."

Gannon attended the conference with the goal of reducing traffic accidents in Homewood as well as making the village more bicycle-friendly.

"The conference was obviously aimed at the zone in Chicago that was discussed," he said, "but there were plenty of things that could be applied to Homewood."

According to Gannon, the most interesting aspect of the conference was the discussion of adding bike and turning lanes to the traditional four-lane road.

"They talked about changing it to one lane going each way, with a turning lane and a bike lane on each side," he said. "The turning lane would help with traffic flow and safety, and the bike lane would probably cut down on traffic by encouraging people to ride."

Other ideas Gannon mentioned include making crosswalks more visible, adding a "countdown clock" for crosswalks and improving radar technology for enforcement of traffic laws.

"I really think that we are steps ahead (of other suburbs) in many ways, and things like this (conference) can only help," he said.
