Pertains to Lake Barrington | |
Lake Barrington is known for its country atmosphere, and residents are willing to pay to keep it that way. Nearly 62 percent of voters said "yes" Tuesday when asked whether the village should borrow $5.5 million to buy and protect open space. According to unofficial results, 761 residents voted "yes" on Tuesday's ballot question; 473 voted "no." With voters' endorsement, trustees will meet in closed session within the next two weeks to begin discussing specific land purchases, said Village President Kevin Richardson. "We're thrilled with this outcome," Richardson said. "We've spent a lot of time getting ready for this moment, so we have our ducks in a row and want to get rolling." The current plan calls for the village to buy 40 to 60 acres of undeveloped land in parcels scattered about the village. Purchasing the parcels will cost the owner of a $500,000 home about $175 a year for a 20-year period, though that cost could drop as commercial development generates new tax revenue, Richardson said. "The overarching goal is to maintain the countryside flavor of the community," he said. "Over time, I suspect more of the open space would fall to recreation." Some parcels could be leased to farmers for cropland, which would significantly lower the maintenance cost to the village. Other pieces of land might be more appropriate for recreational uses, Richardson said. The [Lake Barrington] referendum isn't binding, meaning trustees could vote to approve or reject the plan regardless of the ballot outcome. |
