Two new land purchases by the Lake County Forest Preserve District will expand the Heron Creek Forest Preserve near Long Grove and provide more open space for residents of southern Lake County.

The Forest Preserve Board this week was expected to finalize the purchase of two land buys totaling 96 acres adjacent to the Heron Creek preserve, which will increase the total size of the preserve to 240 acres.

The largest addition is a 95-acre parcel adjoining the southern boundary of the Heron Creek preserve at the southwest corner of state Route 22 and Old McHenry Road.

"It's a very beautiful piece of property. It has a lake on the property. It's directly adjacent to the Heron Creek preserve so it's a nice addition," said Forest Preserve Executive Director Tom Hahn.

The property was acquired for $5.73 million from CF Industries, which recently moved its headquarters to Deerfield. The property includes a large portion of Salem Lake. The site also features woodlands, ponds and open fields and adjoins the Reed Turner Nature Preserve owned by the Long Grove Park District. The Indian Creek water basin also flows through a portion of the property. The purchase does not include the former headquarters building of CF Industries.

"It's an excellent addition. It expands a preserve in an area where we don't have a lot of open space. It provides multiple benefits for habitat and residents," he said.

The forest preserve district also acquired another 1.06-acre addition on the northwest corner of the Heron Creek preserve along Route 22 from Kemper Insurance Cos. for $60,000.

Hahn said the district plans to add a walking trail along Salem Lake and may look at a fishing pier on the lake. He said the land additions also provide the potential for future trail connections to Cuba Road and hopefully linkages to other trail systems in the Long Grove area.
