A resolution adopting the Lindenhurst Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Comprehensive plan was approved this week by the village and park district boards.

The next step is to implement the plan that outlines eight trail segments at a proposed cost of about $4 million.

"The beauty of this plan is that it doesn't have to be one massive project. We can do it one linear foot at a time, filling in gaps and starting with the shorter areas and some day, in five or 10 years, we will have a complete trail system," said village Trustee Timothy Wayne.

"It is important that the public understand the project is meant to be done over years as funds permit. We want to move forward, but we will have to figure out how to implement the plan in a timely and reasonable fashion," said Trustee Dominic Marturano.

The proposed trail system was a top priority of residents responding to a community needs survey sponsored by the park district. Four public sessions were held as part of this planning process, with residents indicating a desire to be able to walk or bike to the library, parks, the Grand Avenue retail area and to forest preserve properties in and near Lindenhurst.

Park District Director Tom Lippert said small components of the plan are already being built. "For example, we are incorporating a pedestrian and bike path into our improvements at John Janega Memorial Park south of Hastings Lake. Each year during the budget process and as new developments are proposed or we make improvements in the village, we will incorporate the bike and pedestrian trail according to our village-wide plan. We are already working with the Lake County Forest Preserve to tie into their trails."

"We want to make sure every improvement or new development hooks up to other planned or existing paths," said Lippert.

The path is designed to link to other paths in other communities, unincorporated Lake County and forest preserve properties. "Cooperation has been great with all our neighbors in designing the plan," said Lippert.

Both the village and park district will look at grant possibilities to pay for the project, and a list of possible sources of funding is included in the study that was prepared by Bonestroo and Associates.

The final plan will be posted on the park district Web site by the end of the month.

"I assure you this plan won't sit on the shelf collecting dust," said Lippert.
