Pertains to North Aurora
NORTH AURORA -- Bicyclists soon might have an easier time pedaling from the village's east side to its west side.

The village has received a $85,797 federal grant from the Chicago Area Transportation Study's Policy Committee for engineering and construction of the first stage of the Ruby Bikeway.

The proposed trail is named for former Village President Mark Ruby, who is an avid bicyclist. The trail initially would connect Kingswood Drive/Willow Way to the Fox River bike trail.

Ruby, who recently resigned as village president and moved to the Mill Creek subdivision, said he was happy to see the project moving forward.

"It is a good start. You appreciate it more when you get everything connected," Ruby said.

North Aurora received the grant as part of CATS' congestion mitigation and air quality improvement program. Stage 1 of the Ruby Bikeway would cost $107,246.

The village would be required to pay for 20 percent of the project's cost, or $21,449.

Ed Barsotti, executive director of the League of Illinois Bicyclists, has pushed for the project. The group promotes bicycle access, education and safety.

"It would be an improvement over what exists now. I think it is a good idea," Barsotti said.

Stage 2 of the Ruby Bikeway would connect the trail to Randall Road. Eventually, the trail would go out to Orchard Road and beyond.
