A new trail connecting Cuba Marsh Forest Preserve to Citizens Park in Barrington will be partially funded with two major donations to the Lake County Forest Preserve District. An anonymous donor has contributed $100,000 toward the cost of a bridge needed for the trail connection as a memorial to Keith Pederson, a Forest Preserve Board member from 1972 to 1976, according to Board President Bonnie Thomson Carter. Carter said that in recognition of the donation and to honor Pederson's love of nature and wildlife, the bridge will be dedicated as the Keith Pederson Bridge. Also, the district has received a $100,000 donation for the trail from the Barrington Park District. At the request of the Barrington Park District, the Forest Preserve Board approved a plan for a trail extension connecting the existing trails at Cuba Marsh to Citizens Park, the land that once served as headquarters for what is now Jewel-Osco. When complete, visitors will be able to use a 0.75-mile gravel trail that winds from existing trails at Cuba Marsh through the southwest corner of the preserve to Citizens Park, where it will connect to the park's existing pathways. A 50-foot timber bridge and an 830-foot boardwalk, the longest ever built by the Lake County Forest Preserve District, will span wetlands along the trail. Work on the trail project began in August, and the trail is scheduled to open to the public later this fall. |
