GENEVA -- The Kane County Forest Preserve District is the new owner of the former Illinois Youth Center property in unincorporated Valley View. While forest preserve officials have been negotiating with the state for quite a while, district President John Hoscheit announced officially this week that the closing has taken place. The district paid about $3.6 million for the property, said Hoscheit, R-St. Charles. "This is another property we've been working on that the new referendum made possible," Hoscheit said. "With removal of structures there, this will be one of the few parks in that area." Hoscheit was not specific about which structures on the property would be removed. But he said some will stay, because the forest preserve district will huddle with the St. Charles Park District about putting some programs in the buildings. The property was a state youth correctional facility for years. The state closed it as such about five years ago. At one time, Kane County officials even considered buying the property as an annex to the Kane County Jail. Valley View is an unincorporated subdivision on a bend in the Fox River between St. Charles and South Elgin. The subdivision started as a place for summer vacation homes, and at one time was incorporated into a village. It is the only village in the history of Illinois that unincorporated after incorporating. |
