Bartlett resident Terry Witt's dream of a bike path connecting the entire Village might just become a reality. Witt, owner of Spin Doctor Cyclewerks in downtown Bartlett, las week solicited Village support for the Woodland Hawk Trail, which he is proposing to the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. "Our Forest Preserve District builds safe, recreational trails with environmentally sound practices," Witt said. "Our local commissioner, Roger Kotecki, has a long history of stewardship, championing many of the fine trails we enjoy." Witt's proposal would take advantage of a new traffic light planned for Woodland Heights Parkway and Route 59. He believes this new traffic signal would provide the safest crosswalk for Route 59, providing pedestrian-friendly access. Witt is proposing the Forest Preserve District build a trail from Granger Road, east of Route 59, to the intersection of Schick and South Bartlett Road. The land is FOrest Preserve District property, he said, and connects to the Bartlett bike path system at the intersection. A small connection would then be needed along Route 59, between Grainger and Woodland Hills Parkway. Witt last week asked the Village to consider providing safe crosswalks at both ends of the trail. Village President Catherine Melchert said the Village was supportive of the plan and also would support getting funds for the project. Village administrator Valerie Salmons said staff met with Witt and supported the plans. She said staff would prepare a resolution of support when the Village Board was ready to take that step. Witt is encouraging other residents interested in seeing the bike path constructed to contact Kotecki and the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County to express their support. Kotecki can be reached at (630) 393-1890. |
