Pertains to Valley Line Trail, Chicago, Lincolnwood | |
The Chicago Department of Transportation is expected to shut down a portion of Rogers Avenue this week to replace a viaduct near Sauganash Park as work continues on the Valley Line Trail. Plans call for demolishing the old railroad bridge, just east of the park, 5861 N. Kostner Ave., and putting a specially-designed span in its place. Local traffic would be allowed in as far as either side of the viaduct, said Maria Castaneda, a CDOT spokeswoman. The street could be opened by early December, she said. Work on a second viaduct, on Peterson Avenue at Kostner, could begin about the middle of this month. Castaneda said there would likely be some lane reductions in either direction as sections of the bridge are removed. Peterson would be closed completely at that location, during off-peak times, as the new bridge is erected. Lighted signs will be set up in the area to keep motorists updated, Castaneda said. She also provided a progress report last Friday on how work on the multi-use trail itself was going so far. Crews finished putting in the first layer of asphalt along its length. Once a second layer is complete, gravel for the running/walking portion of the trail will be put down. The access ramp at Thome Avenue was about 75 to 85 percent finished, with some sewer relocation work pending. The ramp at Sauganash Park was not as far along, Castaneda said. CDOT is shooting for completion of the one-mile Valley Line Trail by early December. Landscaping, such as plantings along the path's two-foot border, would be done next spring. |
