Pertains to Fox River Trail, South Elgin | |
South Elgin leaders are working to realign a Fox River trail that is both unsafe and eroding. Right now, users of the Fox River Trail south of the State Street bridge and west of the river must ride or walk through a parking lot near the village's municipal annex. No one has been seriously injured, but officials have hatched a $500,000 plan to reroute the path, stabilize an eroding riverbank and provide some educational opportunities. "The No. 1 priority is to provide a safe route for residents," said Bob Ijams, senior associate at Hitchcock Design Group, a Naperville-based firm hired by the village to draw up plans. "It's really a short link of the river walk. It's going to be the start of future river walk trails for South Elgin." In a nutshell, the village will erect a small plaza south of State Street where it meets Water Street. Then, instead of running north and south, the path will wind clockwise around the annex and reconnect near SEBA Park. Over the winter, the village will apply for permits from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Army Corps of Engineers to stabilize the eroding west riverbank. Benches, native plants and educational kiosks will be added to the path where it bends around the building. "It's going to set the standard for shoreline stabliziation in South Elgin," added Jim Reuter, the village's parks and recreation department. "(Residents) will be very surprised and delighted by the new path." The village landed a $100,000 state grant and a $85,000 grant from the Kane County Forest Preserve to help pay for the project. The balance will be paid for through a special downtown taxing district. Ijams said work hopefully will begin in spring 2009 and wrap up by that fall. |
