LAKE COUNTY - The Skokie Valley Bike Path along U.S. Highway 41 will be extended more than a mile north from Lake Forest to Lake Bluff.

The extension will be done this year and give bicyclists a new, uninterrupted route from Highland Park to Mundelein.

The Lake County Board voted Tuesday to award a $2.1 million contract to build the extension to Illinois Highway 176, where it will link to the east-west North Shore Bike Path in Lake Bluff.

A tunnel for the path will be built under the Union Pacific Railroad spur line, said Marty Buehler, director of the Lake County Division of Transportation. The rail line will be closed for about 30 hours this spring to build the tunnel, he said.
