A plan by south suburban leaders to create more recreational opportunities along the Cal-Sag Channel is spurring talk of renaming the 85-year-old waterway.

Blue Island Mayor Donald Peloquin, whose town is a key member of the newly formed Calumet River Corridor Council, said that the council believes the channel's name should be changed to the Calumet River.

"it's just informal now, but sometime down the road we'll try to get it changed officially," he said after the City Council voted unanimously to join the river panel.

Peloquin said the name change would coincide with leaders' attempts to change the image of the channel from an "industrial wasteland" to a resource everyone in surrounding areas can enjoy.

The river council, which also includes representatives from Riverdale, Dolton, Robbins, Calumet Park, Burnham and Calumet City, is working to raise private and public funds to add amenities such as biking trails and fishing stations along the 16-mile waterway.

Originally dug to handle sewage from the growing Chicago area, the channel was heavily polluted for years, even though pleasure craft have long traveled its waters.

But the channel has experienced a rebirth over the last 15 years, much of which is because of several aeration stations added along its length. The stations, which include cascading waterfalls, have themselves become attractions.

Peloquin said other towns along the channel, including Alsip, Worth, Palos Heights, Palos Park and Lemont, are expected to join the council.

As for the name change, it likely would require several local and federal approvals before it could become a reality, Peloquin said.

But he said council members will refer to the waterway as the Calumet River as a matter of policy.

"It's a marketing concept," he said.
