Trail cooperation was the right path

The recent opening of the first sections of a new nature trail from Chicago to Lockport is an example of what should happen more often in the Chicago area — governments working together.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District and the forest preserve districts in Cook, Will, and DuPage counties have cooperted to create a 26-mile trail for hiking, cross-country skiing and bicycling.

As part of the Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor, the nature trail will run along the Des Plaines River, the Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Illinois and Michigan Canal.

Six miles of the trail were dedicated last week and another five, from the Water District's mainstream pumping station in Hodgkins to Willow Springs Road will open by the end of this year. Ultimately, the trail will link 100 miles of paths from LaSalle and Peru to Navy Pier.

Besides preserving about 1,000 acres of forests and wetlands, this particular trail makes our state's history more accessible. The trail will point out historic and natural features along the way, like the site where the Rev. Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet used the portage between the Chicago and Des Plaines rivers.

Moreover, the natural beauty of this trail and those linked to it will help provide a calming safety valve for those of us pressured by the daily concerns of urban living.

We hope this is just the start of more miles of nature trails in northeastern Illinois, now that new state funding for recreation trails is available.
