Pertains to Pipeline, Schaumburg | |
Woodfield area bike commuters living east of Route 53 should cross their fingers and hope Schaumburg gets funding approval for a new bike path along Martingale Road. The village has applied for a federal grant to pay for most of a $1.4 million project to build a bike path from Olympic Park to White Trail in Elk Grove Village. The new path would allow easier access for cyclists riding to the northwest suburbs' largest commercial center. From the east, any rider who can get to Busse Woods in Elk Grove Village could take forest preserve trails to the bike bridge over 53 that leads to White Trail. From there, they could ride up along Martingale to Olympic Park, which connects to Schaumburg's extensive bicycle network. Schaumburg is also working with Hoffman Estates to improve bicycle access along Higgins Road. In addition to drawing more cyclists from the west, that could also help Schaumburg residents get to Poplar Creek Forest Preserve and other destinations that way. Schaumburg transportation planner Richard Bascomb there is a practical commuting benefit to having such routes which could ultimately help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. "They both serve a real valuable purpose outside of recreational access," Bascomb said of the proposed Martingale and Higgins routes. "These are business-purposed trips." Schaumburg is awaiting word from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning on whether the village will qualify for a grant to pay for all but about $300,000 of the Martingale Road bike trail. A recommendation could come as early as July. |
