| GENEVA -- City officials want to build a $250,000 west-side bike trail on an abandoned railroad right of way to connect Wheeler Park to a St. Charles trail. The three-quarter-mile bike path would go from West State Street on the south to approximately Gray Street on the north, abutting Wheeler Park. The trail would provide an important connection to existing trails, City Planner Dick Untch said. "Construction of this bike path would provide both regional and local enhancement to the bikeway network in and around Geneva," Untch said. "The new bike path would provide the missing trail link between South Street at the Seventh Street bike route and the terminus of the Fox River Trail at the north edge of Wheeler Park." The city seeks a Chicago Area Transportation Study Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant to pay for the bike path. If approved, the city and Geneva Park District would split its 20 percent -- or $50,000 share -- of the cost. City engineer Dan Dinges said people already use the path on an informal basis. "It's already a worn path," Dinges said. "But we're looking to make this connection and have it be fully functional. There are areas where it is wider and areas just wide enough to walk through." The grant application seeks to make the path 10 feet wide. The abandoned railroad right of way leads north and northeast towards an existing St. Charles trail which crosses and follows Route 31 north. "We're trying to get from the St. Charles bike path that connects into Wheeler Park, connect to it, and then have it go south to State Street," Dinges said. |
