Where You Can Take a Walk in the Suburbs

Whether you walk for exercise, for fresh air or for the company of your walking partner, walking is something you can do just about anywhere.

But we all have our favorite spots. Area park districts offer long, paved paths, many of which interconnect, creating a huge interwoven grid of suburban walking trails. Some paths are solely for walking, while others are open to inline skaters, bikers, stroller-pushers, etc.

If you're looking to expand your walking horizons, try one of these:

Arlington Heights

Lake Arlington: 2201 N. Windsor Drive. Open from dawn until dusk; no dogs allowed; bikes and in-line skating allowed

Length: 2 miles.

The walk: Trail winds around Lake Arlington, through 93 acres of wilderness areas, including a new purple martin community.

Amenities: Water fountains, soda machine, benches, picnic area, washrooms, lake-view deck. Concession area open throughout summer.

Other activities: Boat rentals, sailing lessons, catch-and- release fishing.

Bartlett

Apple Orchard Community Park: 700 S. Bartlett Road. Open dawn till dusk; no dogs allowed; bikes and in-line skating allowed

Length: 1.5 miles.

The walk: Partly paved, with some sections remaining wood-chip, the trail passes by athletic fields and through O'Brien Woods, leading up to the community center and aquatic center.

Amenities: Two drinking fountains, benches, two shelters with picnic benches, summer concession area

Other activities: Skate park, two tennis courts, a baseball field, five soccer fields, four softball fields, playground, two lighted basketball courts, wintertime ice skating and a nature area.

Sunrise Park: Between Struckmann Boulevard and Foster Avenue; open dawn till 9 p.m.; no dogs allowed; bikes and in-line skating allowed

Length: About 1 mile.

The walk: Most of asphalt path runs through open areas and alongside a pond on 43 acres of rolling hills

Amenities: Playground, picnic area, benches, but no water fountains or food concessions.

Other activities: 18-hole disc golf course, two basketball half- courts, fishing pond.

Buffalo Grove

Willow Stream Park: 600 Barrington Drive; open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.; dogs, bikes and in-line skating allowed

Length: 3.5 miles

The walk: The 54-acre, well-maintained park circles the athletic fields, and connects with Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve

Amenities: Water fountains, benches, restrooms

Other activities: Tennis courts, baseball fields, volleyball courts, swimming pool, disc golf course

Busch Grove Community Park: 1000 N. Buffalo Grove Road; open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.; dogs, bikes and in-line skating allowed

Length: About 1.8 miles

The walk: The trail is part of a 76-acre park with internal signage to educate walkers about local wildlife, mile markers and different route options. Runs through a wetland area, with several varieties of birds, and large numbers of deer.

Amenities: Two drinking fountains, vending machine, restrooms

Other activities: Buffalo Grove Spray 'N Play.

Des Plaines

Lake Park: Lee Street, between Howard and Touhy avenues; open dawn till dusk; no dogs allowed; bikes and in-line skating allowed

The walk: The path runs along the park area, with scenic views of Lake Opeka.

Amenities: Water fountain at Lake Park Memorial Pavilion, concession area at Lake Park Clubhouse, 12 benches, picnic area, washrooms.

Other activities: Volleyball courts, sail boating, paddle boating, fishing, 18-hole golf course, playground and various year- round activities.

Prairie Lakes: 515 E. Thacker St.; open dawn till dusk; no dogs allowed; bikes and in-line skating allowed

Length: half mile, three quarter mile, full mile

The walk: Lush landscaping and ponds with ducks and blue and white heron.

Amenities: Two drinking fountains, 14 benches, vending machines, concession area inside Prairie Lakes Community Center.

Other activities: Volleyball, soccer fields, Prairie Lakes Community Center
