| Pertains to Valley Line Trail, Chicago | |
| Work on the Valley Line Trail bicycle path, which will be built in Sauganash on the former Chicago & North Western railroad right-of-way, could begin by the end of the year, according to the city Department of Transportation. The approximately 1-mile-long section of unused right-of-way runs from Devon Avenue east of Kostner Avenue north past Sauganash Park, and then curves west to cross Devon Avenue west of Kostner. An unpaved path on the right-of-way already exists north of Devon in Lincolnwood. Department spokeswoman Maria Castaneda said that plans for the 22-foot-wide multi-use path are being reviewed by the state Department of Transportation, which will use federal funds from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program to pay for the project. Once IDOT approves the plans, bids will be sought for the estimated $1.8 million project. Castaneda said that, depending on IDOTs approval, the project could begin this year and could be completed by early next summer. [As of December 17, 2006:] The federal funds from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program were not approved / revoked. |
